Once Upon a Dream

Maggie has making up stories for us.

Her stories all start the same way.

Instead of the typical, "Once Upon A Time", her stories start "Once Upon a Dream".

I recall singing the Once Upon A Dream song to her once or twice a long time ago, but otherwise have no idea where this started. This is a classic example of a blog post made solely so I do not forget this little tidbit. :)

Dora Backpacks, Trains and Nipples. Washington, DC Has It All!

I had to go to Washington, DC for work so we decided to extend our stay and make a vacation out of it.  We left Monday morning and returned Sunday afternoon.  I had work meetings Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday all day, but got a 90 minute break for lunch each day so on those days, Nate and Maggie did something in the morning, met me for lunch, returned to nap and then I met them by the pool.

As we are always reminded on "vacation", traveling with kids is both fun and exhausting.

Preparations
I bought some new books and activities for the trip - mainly one of those Crayola Color Wonder marker packets (big hit), Maggie's first I Spy book (huge hit) and a Special Agent Oso book (I could read this in my sleep).  Maggie's hand-me-down Dora suitcase broke a week before our trip so we took her to Target and told her she could pick out a backpack.  She had requested a backpack earlier this year so she was thrilled.  She picked out the gaudiest one Target had and proudly wore it through the airport:

(Note her glorious outfit as well - she slept in that polka dotted sweatshirt and refused to leave it at home.)

We ended up bringing one large suitcase and one carry-on sized suitcase, both of which we checked) and then I had a backpack and Maggie had a backpack for the plane.  We gate checked the stroller.  This amount of luggage was perfect for us, as we were planning on relying on the Metro in DC.

We also were going to have Maggie sleep in a regular bed for the first time.  Trial by fire, right?  This originally was not the plan - we were going to pack up "vacation bed" (the Toddler Air Mattress that I have blogged about before) but it conveniently was flat the morning we left.  I haven't investigated it fully to know if it has a hole or what.

Overall, I thought she was at a GREAT age for travel - so much easier now that we only have a pull-up at night and don't require any "stuff".  We gambled and did not bring any toys for the hotel room - she had some coloring books, stickers and a stack of books.  It was actually harder to pack for myself as I had to try on stuff to see if it still fit!

Travel
The flight was great.  Maggie loved being on an airplane, had zero issues with ears either way and basically we read books, colored and went through the I Spy book.   We did not have any meltdowns, either.  The only issue that we did have is that she refused to go to the bathroom on the airplane potty.  On the way there, we did not plan for this and she was able to hold it the whole flight but did end up wetting her pants soon after - apparently airport bathrooms are not any better.  On the way home, we had her go before the flight and I put a pull-up on over her underwear just in case.  Of course when you are prepared, everything goes fine :)

The bathroom situation was probably our biggest barrier on travel days.  Maggie has a fear of public toilets - she will flat out refuse to go in them.  This got better as the trip went on, but she actually wet her pants twice on Day 1 (and then thankfully never again!).

One of the highlights for her was the subway.  She love love LOVED taking the train.  She especially loved when we let her get out of the stroller and sit on an actual train seat. I took her picture on it the last day and it is one of the few photos where she was actually smiling!
Hotel
We had a regular sized (aka small) hotel room at a Marriott.  I had called ahead to get two queen beds but of course when we checked in, they didn't have a record of that so we had one King bed.  Thankfully, they provided a roll-away.  (Maggie is so NOT a co-sleeper.)  We had zero issues with sleeping in the rollaway bed - she loved it and requested a "big girl bed" at home.  YES!  (I'll have more on that later.)

Our hotel was fine.  Our room was very standard, the bathroom was VERY tiny but we survived.  It is definitely easier to have a separate living room.  I actually was going to bed at the same time as Maggie so it ended up being fine that we had the lights out around 8 PM eastern.  Nate is addicted to Candy Crush, so he could do that until god knows what hour on the iPad without lights. :)

We were excited to be on the top floor, as that was the Concierge level.  We thought this meant we had access to snacks - nope.  Had to be an "elite" member to do that.  Darn! Those snacks would have come in handy!

The pool at our hotel was clutch though.  It was outdoors, with a lot of lounge chairs, and beautiful potted flowers everywhere.  You can actually get an annual pass to the pool to use if you are not a guest at the hotel.  We went to the pool every day.  The extra nice thing about it was that the shallow end was the perfect depth for Maggie to swim on her own.  She was VERY proud of herself for that.

The first four nights of our hotel were very nice - no noise issues at all.  Unfortunately the last two nights were awful.  One of them had a young guy talking on his cell phone in the hall from 3-4AM.  Maggie was then up from 3-4:30.  Thanks buddy!  The next night a very pregnant woman did the same thing around 12:30 AM.  Thankfully Nate and I were the only ones with sleeping issues that night - Maggie slept through.  Are we losing it?  Is this totally acceptable behavior and we are just "old"?!

The hotel was in a great location - right across the street from the red line Woodley Park/Zoo Metro Stop, which made our travels by train super easy.

Food
DC has great food, no question.  We were lucky to have a stretch of great restaurants right outside our hotel, which is where we ate for lunch the days that I had work meetings.  We had mediterranean, Indian and Noodles.  Ha! Yes, Noodles like the Noodles that are across WI.  As in Maggie's favorite restaurant.  I think that was her favorite meal. :)

We also traveled to Dupont Circle several times for food as it was only one Metro stop away or a short walk (1 mi).  We visited the Eastern Market and Adams/Morgan neighborhoods for food as well.

For breakfast, we initially were getting single serve cereals, yogurt and fruit from the coffee shop in our hotel for a premium.  We then wised up and bought a box of cereal and milk from the CVS across the street and ate cereal in our hotel room.  Given that cereal is Maggie's favorite breakfast food, this ended up being perfect.
At a pizza place in Dupont Circle

She is obsessed with cupcakes so Georgetown Cupcake was a favorite!

Activities
Monday was raining in DC so we spent as much time indoors as we could.  We toured the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of American History.  Maggie really loved the butterfly exhibit in the Natural History Museum.  We have a very similar exhibit at the MKE Public Museum so that will be fun to revisit - she was pretty young when we first took her there and had zero memory of it.

Nate and Maggie toured the National Zoo and Museum of Air and Space while I was in meetings.  They also found out about a nearby playground.  We went back to the National Zoo on Saturday because I wanted to see the Pandas.  We also toured several of the monuments (Washington, MLK Jr, FDR, Lincoln, Vietnam, Korean War, WWII) The White House, and the National Cathedral.  Maggie was more into the monuments than I thought she would be.  She really liked the FDR one with all of the fountains.

Some of my favorite memories are her, riding in her stroller, saying, "Hey guys, wanna play a little I Spy?"  while we were walking through the city and doing this little song and dance routine in her high falsetto voice, "I love to sing, I love to dance" while walking.  She also had a classic line for our maid, which those of you on Facebook were already privy to.  B was one of Maggie's favorite people on vacation.  She talked to her every day and colored her a picture for her cart.  We even ran into B on the Metro one night.  Well, B also had a large mole on her face.  Maggie asked her, not once but twice, "B why do you have that nipple on your face?".  Nate was a quick thinker and translated this to "nickel" referring to B's earrings the first time.  (It helped that there was a bit of a language barrier between Maggie and B.)  The second time, we were in the loud subway so we just moved the conversation along.  I tried explaning that it was a mole, not a nipple, when B was out of hearing range.  She never asked B again after that.

Overall it was a great trip, although always a little more tiring to be out of your element with a two year old.  Her sleep got messed up for sure and she didn't eat the best so there were some trying nights.  But we survived, and I still think traveling with kids is worth it!

How I Imagine Maggie Might Campaign for the Presidency...

We just arrived home from a 6-night stay in our nation's capital.  It was exciting, fun, exhausting and tiring.  Did I mention that we are pooped?  Hoping to get some photos and a recap up this week.  Stay tuned!

2013 Goals: May Update

I am a little late with this one but here is my Goals Update for the month of May.  You thought April was slim pickings?  May isn't much better!  Not much room for goals when you are on the couch all the time!  Note to self: Do not set goals the year you want to get pregnant!

1. Movie List!

Believe it or not, I WATCHED ANOTHER MOVIE OFF OF MY LIST! I have found that something that helps me out with this is putting the movies on my library hold list.  I got Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (again) from the library and Some Like It Hot.  Unfortunately the Butch Cassidy DVD once again did not work.  (You may recall I had this same problem a few months ago.)  I did watch Some Like It Hot.  I really liked it - it was very funny and I was happy to have finally seen a Marilyn Monroe movie.  Wow was she beautiful, huh?!

2. Book List!

I cruised on the books this month, reading 5.  I also added a book (#12) that I actually read in April, but for obvious reasons, haven't included it on this list until now.
I am 49% through my goal at the end of May.

1. The Tie that Binds by Kent Haruf
2. How to Be Good by Nick Hornby
3. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
4. Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
5. The Round House by Louise Erdrich
6. Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson
7. This is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz
8. How to Be A Woman by Caitlin Moran
9. Blog, Inc by Joy Cho
10. The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger
11. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
12.  Belly Laughs: The Naked Truth about Pregnancy and Childbirth by Jenny McCarthy
13. Rice by Su Tong
14. Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg
15.  Teaching Montessori in the Home: The Pre-School Years by Elizabeth Hainstock
16. Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter
17. The Love of My Youth by Mary Gordon

<strike> 3. Run 500 miles! </strike>

Ah, running.  I will have to dedicate a future post or two to this topic but I am removing this goal from my list this year.  While my initial weeks of pregnancy were very running friendly, it has been a little iffy.  I would like to do a 5K while pregnant, which is something I did while pregnant the first time around.  I don't know that I'll be running through 32 weeks like the first time around though! I'm just trying to take it day by day.  More later!

4. Date Night!

Um, given that it was really all I could do to get through the day during the month of May, there weren't any dates.  I don't know that I even recall seeing my husband this month, ha ha ha.  However, I did suck it up to go see Anthony Bourdain + Eric Ripert mid-month.

Now that I no longer am nauseous all the time, I do want to go see The Great Gatsby and Before Midnight so maybe a date night will happen in June.

5. Organization!
5a: Use the Samples!
We have been doing this....with no signs of running out yet!

5b: Organize play room/basement!
No progress beyond what was reported already.

5c. Craft purge!
No craft purchases

6. Room Redux!
6a: Maggie's room!
Still have to update the art and get an actual bed for Maggie.

6b: Our room!
The only thing left to do in our room is extend the curtain behind the bed.

6c: Dining room!
Nothing done.

6d: Craft side of the toy room!
Nothing done.

7. Try something new once a month!
We tried two new-to-us restaurants, c.1880 and The Slinger House.

I had tried some new-to-me music venues in Nashville and learned new things at the training I attended.

You Know You're Pregnant When...

1. You are feeling very nauseous on the way home from a family Easter celebration.  When you tell your husband, "I'm pretty sure I'm pregnant" he responds with, "I am not feeling that well either."

2.  You confirm your suspicions with one* home pregnancy test the day before your period is due.  It reads "pregnant".  The husband now believes you when you say, "I'm pregnant". *Note: This is fourteen tests LESS than you went through during your first pregnancy.

3. All you want to eat is bacon.  Your house has a perma-bacon smell.

4.  This is the most desirable thing on the planet:
(Yes that is a taco shell made out of bacon.)

5.  You beg your husband to get you a Doritos Locos Taco from Taco Bell, something you used to make fun of when TV commercials for them came on.  He complies.  This is on the way to pick up carryout from a local Mexican restaurant.

6.  You can't make it through the day without a nap on your yoga mat on your office floor.

7.  SHAZAM!  Up a cup size.

8. You fall asleep during a conference call at work, only to wake up in a puddle of drool and a prayer that they didn't ask you any questions.

9.  Craving some eggs?  cheese?  Both at the same time? ALL the time?

10.  It's 5:00 PM and you ask if that is too early to go to bed.

11.  The body pillow somehow ends up back in your bed. Thank goodness you upgraded to a king sized bed after the first pregnancy.

12.  You visit the zoo and discover that you now share one more thing with Amy the Cow besides the name (hint: see sign hanging on lower right hand corner of the maroon sign).  This cracks you and your husband up.

13.  You start craving any sort of junk food and your grocery cart reflects it.  Pop-tarts?  Sugar cereal?  Chips?  YES PLEASE.  (Side note: Your husband has never been happier.)

14.  You call your husband on the way home from work.  "How about we go out for burgers tonight?", you say nonchalantly.  Your burger, topped with a fried egg, bacon, and cheese, arrives and you have the whole thing gone before your husband has a quarter of his gone.  You don't tell him you kind of want a second.

15.  Your doctor waves an ultrasound wand over your lower pelvis 8 weeks after your LMP and produces this:
16.  Your doctor then proceeds to ask you how you have been feeling.  When you respond, "Not so great", he replies with, "Don't take this the wrong way, but you don't look so great."

17.  You are given a due date:  12/8/13.

18. Microwave popcorn is so.freaking.DELICIOUSSSSSSSSSSSS!

19. You have to physically choke down water, but lemonade?  Lemonade is the most delicious thing on Earth...besides microwave popcorn.

20.  Speaking of lemonade, you so badly are in need of lemonade that on the way home from picking your daughter up from her babysitter's house, you stop by the Walmart neighborhood market (where you SWORE you would never spend a dime) and buy some lemonade, which you also let your daughter have some even though you SWORE she would never drink sugary drinks.

21.  People, especially your husband, start to wonder if you're afflicted with narcolepsy.

22.  Friends guess that you are pregnant when they ask you, "How are you?" and you respond, "Tired".

23.  You are nauseous from sun up to sundown and then overnight.  After that subsides at week 12, you are thankful but regret not getting the Zofran your doctor gently suggested at week 8.

24.  The Gap Girls skit from SNL featuring Chris Farley eating french fries is referenced at a family dinner in reference to you:
25.  You cry at all of your shows.  Mad Men? Cry.  Mindy Project? Cry.  New Girl? Cry.  Modern Family? Cry.  Nashville, which is so bad its good? Cry.  And trying to read Knuffle Bunny Free to your daughter - SOBFEST.

26.  You wonder why on earth you have to do the abs portion of yoga each week as you haven't seen your abs for weeks.

27.  SHAZAM! Up another cup size.

28.  You tell everyone at a training in Nashville you are pregnant so they don't judge you for how much food you are eating OR for stealing fruit from the fitness room for mid-morning snack.

29.  You wonder how many Fashion Friday topics you could come up with that don't require outfit photos of yourself?

30.  You get lost in the rabbit hole of Google after severely craving a sub sandwich.  Like how bad is deli meat when you are pregnant?  Really bad or just kinda sorta bad?

31.  At 13w3d, you go in for the first trimester screen and get this gem:

And that folks, pretty much sums up the last 13.5 weeks. :)  We are SO EXCITED!

Swimmer Girl

Although swim lessons ended several months ago, we regularly go to the pool at the Y to play.  Nate took Maggie to the Y on Saturday and was very impressed by the fact that she swam by herself (using a float belt and a kickboard).

Needless to say I heard a lot about it when they picked me up for the airport and on Sunday, we donned our suits and headed to the Y so she could show me her skillz.

Girl is getting to be BRAVE!  I was so impressed with how she was in the water.  I could not believe this was the same child that regularly was "that kid" in swim lessons.  We are glad to be heading into summer, where we spend a fair amount of time at the Lake, having a water-loving child, at least when it comes time to swimming.  Much like the day she came home from the hospital, she STILL hates baths.

Work Trip to Nashville

Last week I was in Nashville for an epidemiology training.  I had conflicted feelings about this training; on the one hand, I was excited about it because I was selected to go (I applied last year and got rejected).  On the other, I would be away from home for a long period of time: I left MKE on an 8:30 flight Tuesday morning and returned 6 PM Saturday evening.  I knew it could be done, however, because I was gone for a similar time period last summer for the Johns Hopkins Summer Institute I participated in.

This did not stop me from balling my eyes out at the airport when Nate and Maggie dropped me off.  Or from balling my eyes out in my hotel room shortly before the training began. At that point, I anticipated the next four days as being VERY LONG.

Happily, they sort of flew by once we got in training mode.  Tuesday we had "class" from 2-6 and then, because I was worn out from traveling, I spent the night finishing up my Fashion Friday! post, watching a Law & Order marathon on USA and going to bed.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we had "class" from 8-5/5:30 everyday.  I ended up going to dinner Wednesday and Thursday nights with two women from New Orleans.  The first night we hit up Broadway St, downtown and two of the "honky tonks" for live music.  It was fun, definitely touristy.  I was happy to go though because obviously this is something we could not participate in with Mags when we were in Nashville last fall.

Thursday night we went to dinner and then decided to go to The Station Inn, another live music venue.  We were tired, but thought we would pop in and check it out for a little bit before going to sleep.

Well, it ended up being AMAZING.  I don't know if you watch the show, Nashville, but it was something straight out of that.  Some of the people in the band were famous songwriters (not that we knew that - we ended up Googling them when one of the women recognized a song) and then there were random songwriters in the audience that they would call up on stage.  So you know those random singer/songwriters parties at The Bluebird on Nashville?  It was just like that.  Again, this is not something we knew at the time - we just thought these people were phenomenally talented.

So needless to stay, we stayed until the end of the show and were very tired the next day.  Friday night it was a burger from the dive bar Nate, Mags and I went to when we were there and another Law & Order marathon/early bedtime for me.

I ended up getting out for a run/walk both Wednesday night and Thursday morning.  It was so humid that I ended up walking a bunch but my hotel was directly across the street from Centennial Park, which had a nice one mile loop around.

Saturday we went from 8 until noon and then I hightailed it to the airport for my flight home.  Of course both of my flights home (I first flew to Chicago, and then to MKE) ended up being delayed but the delays only put me home 35 minutes late.

While long trips away from the family are not ideal, the airport reunion almost makes up for it.  Maggie could not stop hugging me and exclaiming "Momma", almost like she couldn't believe I was really there in the flesh.

Thankfully, Mags and Nate are coming with me for my next business trip in just a week!
