Maggie is still in a crib. We have occassionally brought up a big-girl bed with her and her response has always been "I like my crib". We would both let out a big sigh of relief after hearing this, as we have been in no rush to get her out of the crib.
While picking out the paint for her room, I casually mentioned "We are going to paint your room and then someday you can get a big girl bed too" or something to that effect. Imagine my surprise when she replied, "I want a big girl bed now". Over the next couple hours, we brought up the big-girl bed a few times and the response was consistently that she wanted to sleep in a big-girl bed. No more crib.
We have had a Dora the Explorer toddler bed in our basement for quite some time (it was my niece's). Maggie helped us bring the pieces up to her room that night and we moved the mattress from the crib to the toddler bed. She snuggled in. We took cute pictures:
Everything was hunky dory until the lights went out.
"I WANNA SLEEP IN MY CRIB", she wailed.
I tried getting her Bucky Badger pillow pet/nightlight as a special "sleeping in the big kid bed" light. I tried telling her we would have a celebration the next morning after sleeping in the big girl bed. I tried stickers. She wasn't having any of it and I didn't really feel like traumatizing her so...
...we moved the mattress back into the crib (which was still in her room because we hadn't taken it apart yet and couldn't get it out of the room without taking it apart).
"I WANNA SLEEP IN MY BIG GIRL BED", she wailed.
We played the game three times and then finally we just told her she was sleeping in her crib.
We tried the big girl bed at nap the next day, but she wasn't having it.
We're still in the crib but have left the big girl bed up. I'm thinking this might be like the potty - we had a small potty in our bathroom for her to "play" with starting at about age 16 months - and then one day she was interested in really going to the potty and that was the start of potty training. Maybe she'll get used to seeing the big girl bed and one day she will want to really sleep in it. We get to enjoy the control of the crib for a while yet!
Tonight Maggie told me that she was still little so she was still going to sleep in the crib and that she would sleep in the big-girl bed when she got big. (Keep in mind that the mattress is the SAME mattress from her crib, ha ha ha)
I'm curious how the transition from crib to bed went for your kids?
this is hilarious. she does look so cute in that bed.
ReplyDeleteDoes your crib convert to a toddler bed?
ReplyDeleteYes it does convert so we have thought about using that as a transition too. I thought the Dora bed would for sure seal the deal.
